Silo of Panicled Goldenraintree tree

Panicled Goldenraintree

#6544 | Platanus x acerifolia

Look for: Light gray/brown trunk, bipinnately compound, 6-18 inch long with 7-15 rich green leaflets, incisely lobed

Origin: Northern China, Korea, Japan

This small to medium-sized tree (30-40ft), known as the Goldenrain Tree, is at its horticultural peak in the summer and fall. In July, when few other trees are in bloom, this tree produces huge, showy panicles of many small yellow flowers. Fruits produced in the fall resemble inflated paper lanterns that change from green to orange-pink as they mature. Eventually they dry to tan and persist into the winter.

The goldenraintree is native to China, Japan and Korea. It was introduced in America in 1763.
