Cucumbertree Magnolia

#6780 | Magnolia acuminata

Look for: Oblong-ovate 4-10 inch dark green leaves, relatively smooth gray-brown bark

Origin: Eastern North America

Cucumbertree Magnolia is one of the largest and most cold hardy magnolias. It can reach heights of 50 to 80 feet tall at maturity and can endure temperatures below -20°F. The tree’s common name comes from the unripe green fruits that resemble small cucumbers.

Cucumbertree Magnolia is native to the Appalachian Mountain range and plateau, especially from Pennsyl- vania southward. The greenish yellow flowers are not as showy as many other magnolias, but genes for yellow flower color from M. acuminata have been bred in to create new hybrid magnolias with showy yellow flowers.
