Silo of Camperdown Elm tree

Camperdown Elm

#5168 | Ulmus glabra

Look for: 3-7 inch obovate long double serrate dark green leaves, usually gafted 6' to 7' on understock

Origin: Scotland

‘Camperdownii’, often called Camperdown elm, is a small, top-grafted, weeping landscape tree. It typically grows to 15-25’ tall, forming a round dome of contorted branches that weep to the ground. Gafted from wych elm.

This Camperdown Elm was planted in 1895 and survived transplantation plus the ’38 hurricane. Mature specimens such as this one are essentially priceless and irreplaceable. About 4 feet up on the trunk you can clearly see the union where the tree was grafted to the upright root stock of another elm species.
