Look for: 3 to 8 inches long/wide with short acuminate lobe on each side, gray bark furrowed into close
Origin: Eastern North America
A fast-growing tree with bright green leaves that resemble tulip flowers in profile and turn golden yellow in fall. Greenish-yellow flowers are carried high in the tree. Stems are aromatic. Likes full sun. Grows to 70' to 90', 40' spread.
The Tulip Tree competes with the American Sycamore for the title of most massive North American deciduous tree. This specimen, planted in 1905, is the tallest tree on campus and has a circum- ference of over 13 feet. George Washington planted tuliptrees at Mount Vernon which are now 140' tall.
